A fascinating address was delivered to the Rotary by Kapiti resident Vikki Yeoman, who is the Group General Manager Business Development of Callaghan Innovation, which is a Crown Entity established in 2013.
The purpose of Callaghan is to assist business in New Zealand to work smarter in the manner they use to develop new products, and particularly in the area of research and development.‘Our staff are qualified in the science of research, and who have a large range of skills to apply to the assistance of new and existing projects, which when developed and refined, helps to contribute to company growth and the broader New Zealand economy.
Many of our 400 people have come across from the DSIR, and comprise technologists, researchers, scientists, engineers, and business advisory experts, who work alongside management in seeking innovative ways to increase productivity and uniqueness in world markets’, said Ms Yeoman.
Ms Yeoman went on to say that her organisation has assisted to provide sciences for stroke rehabilitation, advanced computer programming, heart-valve replacement techniques, kiwifruit dietary supplements, to name but a few of the successes that they can refer to.
In addition, they work closely with industry organisations, investors, regional economic agencies, Maori, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, and the Ministry Of Business and Innovation.
The budget allotted to this work is $140 Million a year in government funding, which includes a large number of grants made available to establish new enterprises.
